Looking at Circumstances

We are not fundamentally free; external circumstances are not in our hands, they are in God’s hands, the one thing in which we are free is in our personal relationship to God. We are not responsible for the circumstances we are in, but we are responsible for the way we allow those circumstances to affect us; we can either allow them to get on top of us, or we can allow them to transform us into what God wants us to be. ~ Oswald Chambers

There are many times Oswald would write things relating to our relationship with God, loyalty to Jesus, and circumstances around us. I couldn’t find the exact devotion or quote that prompt me to write this.

But there has been many things happened in the last 2 months that I took a pause this morning, and asked if there’s something God wants to get my attention. Soon enough, God opened my eyes to see the numerous things which He is teaching me through the circumstance that I were in.

Like the punctured bicycle tyre that saddened my girls and quite annoyed me after it happened three times. I learnt to know my colleague better and also how to fix a puncture tyre, appreciate another person and people with love for bicycle.

Like the fence that fell down the other day because of strong wind. I tried to fix it and realised it’s bigger than I could imagine and do. And realised it could be an opportunity to get into conversation with my neighbor.

About the pressure cooker that stopped working when we’d important meal with a friend. I learnt an aspect about myself, and also about my wife. It won’t happened if the pressure cooker didn’t stopped working.

The dishwasher that not washing with soap. I’m not sure what God is teaching me through it. But probably along the line of patience, perseverance, having conversation with people, and experiencing how to wash dishes with hands (very troublesome and tiring, especially during cold night).

And there’re many others, like CoronaVirus. God is challenging me to see the world with His eyes and pray bold prayers. This morning, I kind understand better what Os said in so many different ways and devotions about faithfulness to God through circumstance of life. Many times we failed to see the point or meaning of it, but once God opened our eyes and our mind think of God’s view, we begin to see things differently. God does speak through our circumstance & people (even the annoying & mundane) so that we might know Him and be transformed into His likeness.

So take heart when life is going through or under trials. God trains us for our good.
