Righteousness of God

In my journey of knowing God, I was led to meditate on book Deuteronomy. One book which Jesus quoted few times, and one believed it’s the book Jesus loved most…:) I’ve benefited a lot through reading and meditating of it. For some reasons, this year it seems like a new light has dawned. Help me to see things I’ve never seen before. There’s certainly theme about Remembering & Covenant. Afterall, it’s a call to Remember God and what He has done. Not to forget the past when they are about to enter the Promise Land. And certainly with Remembering God and obeying His commands, come the blessings & curses (which I see more as consequences, but to others as theme of the book).

The theme which I been meditating is the holiness & righteousness of God. It comes in the new light as I understand or see before. Probably as my relationship with him grow better, I see things differently now.

God my Father

Last night, I went home bit later than usual. Part of it because there was rain, we were talking and discussing for the event of the day, and it took very long for the bus to come.

Surprising though, at the next stop, an old friend with his family board the bus. He asked me where’s my wife? Then I told him that my wife is expecting. Then began our conversation…..

Through the short bus journey, he shared to me about being a father means / takes….And there’s thing that i was not aware. Out of his concern and care, he told me that he would like to share more next week…..

It’s a small place

I came back from lunch. As i took the lift up, i saw the guy in front of me seems bit familiar. His long hair, and spectacle..only the shirt look different as i tried to recall my memory.I roughly remember him as the same guy i saw this morning as i took the lift down my apartment.
So here inside lift, am i seeing the same person i saw also in lift this morning?

So i said "Hi" to him…..
And his replied……."we stay in the same block."
Hahaha………what a small country….with so many houses…and so many offices………here we stay at same building block, and work at the same office building…:)
Only at home, he stays above me…….but at work, he stays below me……..hahaha 🙂

What is that to you?

Praise the LORD, all you nations;

I was so fixated with my wife hospital claim about 1 month ago. I said one hurtful sentence to her afterward….”this is expensive baby”. Yesterday I rushed to the hospital to settle it…probably hurt few other people also. And today i couldn’t focus my mind as there’re so many questions …and things which i don’t like; inefficiency.

But the thought came to me … questioning my behaviors and why did I behave that way? Thing came to home……what is that $600-$700 to you? That’s certainly a lot of money! But what is that?

I realized that I was at wrong. Just because i pay $700, doesn’t make this baby expensive. She’s far than expensive….she’s a life given by God. And that’s beyond what money can buy or value. What is that $700 for a life? Nothing!

Then my mind rushed to recent news about the Tsunami alert and very big earthquake near Aceh……..I remembered the thousands people and lives. What is that $700 that i thought a lot about it, and forgot to pray and intercede for these thousands and millions could be people? Nothing!

If one baby is so valuable…….how much more these thousands people? As last night we prayed for them, and I carry the burden in my heart…The Lord reminded me as He reminded Jonah…..how much more he cares for these numerous people. And if I want to follow Him, things that matters to him, must matter to me also.

The Psalm 117 rightly put in place. For only Praise to God that matters most at the end. His faithfulness and love endures regardless of anything. And that all praise belongs to Him.

To know that love

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. ~Eph 3:17-19

The thought came to mind. It’s quite natural for human to understand God’s punishment and justice. Somehow it’s embedded in our being. We have no problem and issue to understand God who punishes and judges. The Israelites doesn’t have difficulties to understand this sort of God. Who says, “eye for eye and life for life.”

It is harder to understand God who loves. We have no problem with the first, but we have great difficulties to understand God who loves. Jonah has great difficulties to accept God who showed mercy to his enemies. And Jesus’ disciples had also hard time to believe when Jesus told them to forgive 70×7 times. And the Jews, had extremely hard time to understand the Prodigal Father who embarass himself by running & crying over a prodigal son.

To me, that parable best describe the extent (which is limitless) of God’s love. When I try to understand it, it just stretch further and further. There’re seem to be no limit when I try to find the boundary. To any sins, he seems to forgive, and to any sinners, he seems to love still……

As Paul prays for the Ephesians, I do long to know that love too, with all the saints. Love that found me first.

What nature teaches me

I just share the free lesson that little yellow bird has to teach me…
It’s size is so small, from the window, it look like the size of my thumb.
Yet, i saw her building her nest.
She picked up the leaves & twig with her beak…then she flied to build the nest.
One day, two days, three, and four days, …the nest is getting ready.

The little yellow bird has taught me about shelter.
Importance of preparing for the shelter for the coming baby.
Come sunshine, come heavy rain, come strong wind…….the nest almost destroyed.
But the mother bird, with wisdom God has given her,
put the nest on kind bamboo branch…..so it withstand the strong wind and rain…
The height, the distance from the tip of the branch……all seem calculated perfectly…

One day i saw the nest down my half floor because of the rain.
The next day it’s up again.
Though the wind blow….it stay there…
And thank God, i witnessed how the little baby bird came out from the nest.

During the heavy rain, she look bit anxious….waiting for the mother to come. So she stay put in the nest. On the sunny day, she brought her head out the nest for us to see…:)
God has certainly make them wonderfully.
Even birds have their nest.
So we need to have shelter for our children too.

I asked the Lord

This morning, two things I asked from the Lord
I asked,”Lord, give me the right fear of you.”
and He showed me how Job stood up against families, clans, etc …
I asked,”Lord, give me the heart to love you.”
and my wife woke up early morning, when my mind still in dream land, and both my eyes can’t even opened…there she vomitted and i had to change the bedsheet…

Yet i was not aware yet…..
And as I walked my way to office…
I saw this old man distributing flyers…
I knew I don’t need since i know what advertisement it’s
and I won’t buy it……
So i passed the old man…..

Then second thought occur to me….
He probably didn’t know….
To him is about finishing his job…..
And if i could help…is an act kindness to him…not the advertisement that i won’t buy…..
So I prayed,”Lord, give me heart of kindness…”

And I passed another thing, or another thought came to my mind…….
And I prayed,”Lord give me heart of wisdom and discernment…”

Turning Point

Solomon brought Pharaoh’s daughter up from the City of David to the palace he had built for her, for he said, “My wife must not live in the palace of David king of Israel, because the places the ark of the LORD has entered are holy.” ~ 2 Chr 8:11

This morning, as usual, I opened my bible…then I read. It’s 2 Chr 8 and I thought oh no…what’s good reading the things Solomon did. Isn’t it just historical achivements and records?

But the verse above caught my attention. Of all the things Solomon did and carefully thought, he considered his Egyptian wife can’t live in his father’s place. As result he built her a new majestic place. What’s going on here?

I got impression that this woman is probably Solomon’s greatest love. He mentioned her in his Song of Songs. That’s probably the highlight of his wisdom in composing love songs & book. He composed a book of love for this woman. That’s  unmatched wisdom & endeavor. And secondly, he built her a palace that took almost double the time for him to build God’s temple. That’s certainly unbelievable. Who’s on earth spent 13 years (if i’m not wrong) to build house for his wife…:)

On deeper note however, I sense this could be the turning point in his life. He knew that this woman can’t stay in David’s palace because holiness issue. However, he still try to find way to have it both (devotion to God & devotion this forbidden love). He tried to split between what’s holy and not-holy. He made distinction on what’s of God and what’s not God. We thought that’s normal & doable. But we know from history, his foreign wives is his downfall.

This point of time in Solomon’s life, when he made a distinction, when he made a room of compromise, wanting to keep something for himself, that he began to lose everything. This point of turning of the heart, from wholehearted for God to divide with love for other that cause his downfall. The love for foreign women just a statement that underneath the change of Solomon’s heart, unnoticed by him probably…

He judges & discerns rightly who God is, his holiness, and who’s the person he falls in love to…however as the Bible puts it, he didn’t follow God wholeheartedly as his father David was.

Such a crucial difference between wholehearted and half-hearted devotion. How to keep one’s heart wholehearted throughout lifetime? Lord, please help me, unless I fall short and make a turning point in my life.

Humility

And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

In school, I learn there are many types of education. There was physical education, which i did badly in primary school, there’s also moral education, religious education, and art education. Recently i got to know there’s also financial education for children here in Singapore.

When I read Deu 8, I thought, God does similar thing, he is doing, heart education. And that’s probably the toughest education in life. For me in particular, lesson on humility seems the hardest part. Just when I thought i have learnt my lesson, I realize, I’m not as humble as I should be…

The passage reminded me when one day i thought i’ve reached something in life. When first time I left home, I left with nothing. I had only money sufficient to pay my tuition fees, and I had to work and earn some money for extra food & accomodation. I had only with me one luggage clothes & my old violin. Then slowly the Lord add my possession….that after 10 years, i had 26 boxes + a sum of money in my bank account. Today, i had certainly more…and though i’m not a millionaire or rich person, certainly i have much more than i was before……

The passage reminded me, how God warns his people, when they have eaten, satisfied, had plenty, not lacking in anything, and their posessions multiplied……..their hearts become “lifted up”. I know it is true…my heart became lifted up too. I thought, finally I made it. From nobody, to somebody……

And the way God deals with this particular area, is very painful. In Deu 8, it’s said God “humbled” them for 40 years. In some other translations God “brought their hearts low”, “afflicted”, “mold their hearts”, through hardships & trials……

In short, God caused them to hunger…then feed them…so they know that their lives solely depended upon God’s mercy. They can’t feed themselves. Or the moment God stopped his mercies, they would die. Such humbling lesson.

That’s what particularly I’m dealing at moment. God has to remove or strip away everything…till nothing left, and I’ve nothing to depend on. Nothing for me to say, “I have done it, I have made it”. Apart from the grace of God, I’m nothing.

If there’s prayer I pray today, “Lord make me humble.” I realize that humility is not in words we say. It’s not what we say to ourselves, to others, or to God that makes us humble. But our heart attitude towards everything in life. A humble person takes no credit for himself, and he accepts everything, because he doesn’t see himself deserving. He knows, apart from grace of God, he is nothing……..merely a breath as Moses put it.
